Hello, Rats!
Where on Earth do I even start with this review? Do I give a summary of the plot? A comment on the incredible writing? The ending that left my mind spinning?
I have no idea, but what I do know is that Rabbits For Food has left an impact on me so detrimental that I don't know what to do with myself. If I start a new book, it's not going to hit the same. If I never read again, I'll be stuck in an infinite cycle of perpetual confusion.
On New Year’s Eve, a depressed and sharply humorous writer, Bunny, experiences a public breakdown while out with her husband and friends. She is admitted to a New York hospital’s psychiatric ward, where she resists all recommended treatments.
Let's start with my positive points regarding Rabits For Food. This book was blessed with the attribute of having short chapters, we're talking 1-6 pages max. I love a short chapter, so I flew though this book within two days. Next, it was a dual timeline where we get to see the main character, Bunny, in her present state and also how she ended up in the facility. I found this really to be a really interesting comparison and loved how the chapters ran so smoothly against one another. This book also contained mixed media, with Bunny's writing often making an appearance between chapters, which I adofred simply because the novel itself is in third person, whereas the entries were mostly in first. I know a lot of people aren't a fan of mixed media but I think it's so powerful when it's done well. I found the pacing of the book to be addictive and I definitely enjoyed it.
Now for my less-positive. Overall, finding anything negative to say about Rabbits For Food was tough, simply because of how hooked I was from the get-go, but I've managed to come up with one of thing I wasn't too keen on. Despite the exceptional writing, I didn't feel there was a lot of depth to the characters I really wanted to know, including Bunny herself. Kirshenbaum's writing really was excellent but I definitely felt there were a number of elements lacking depth; from the charaters to settings, I really wanted to go deeper into everything but wasn't able to.
I am rating this novel a solid 4 stars, as I do think the writing, pace, format, and complexity of the timeline has saved it for me.
